Before we moved to Köln, the first thing we were warned about was Carnival. Anyone who lives in the city over the age of 21 usually leaves, everyone under the age of 22 comes to the city from neighboring towns. However, no one mentioned the start of Carnival season which apparently happens on the 11th of November every year.
We soon found out. All over the city just about everyone was dressed up in elaborate costumes. This year was extra special being 11.11.11 and all.
As I walked around the city standing out like a sore thumb, I didn’t have to worry about taking pictures- apparently Germans love to get their pictures taken and posed nicely for “the photographer from America.” Enjoy some of my favorites!
The day was crazy. If this is what the start of Carnival is like, I’m not sure I am up to finding out what the five days of Carnival in February will bring! The real question is – what should I dress up as?
