Italy is fast becoming one of my favorite countries in the world. I could happily visit this country every weekend and not get enough. The food is amazing and the whole country is rich with culture. The people are friendly and the weather is mostly lovely. Florence definitely solidified this for me. It is by far one of my top 5 cities in the world.
We stayed off the beaten path a little out of the way of all the tourists and were so happy we decided to do so. The walk to the duomo was great every morning. Getting cappuccino with the locals at the neighborhood bakery was exciting. Stopping in on the tiny local grocery stores on the way to buy some fresh fruit was a feast for your senses. So much local produce and varieties of vegetables I’d never seen. I just wish I could stay longer to cook with each and every one of them! It was great to be part of the hustle and bustle of the city.
A trip up to the top of the Duomo is a must. Do not let the 20 minutes of climbing deter you. Or the variety of ever changing stairs, spiral, incredibly steep, narrow. Or shimmying past other tourists at dizzying heights. Once you are on top of the dome, you will be rewarded. The red roofs span the whole city all somehow arranged in a makeshift pattern. In the distance are lush green hills with enormous villas. If only I could figure out how to live in one of those!
Of everything in Florence, I highly recommend an evening at the Piazzale Michelangelo with a bottle of Prosecco and disposable wine glasses. The view of the city is amazing, but when bathed in the pinky yellow light of the sunset, the view is gorgeous. It was great to enjoy the view and explore this city with friends. Life is so much better with good friends and a bottle of wine!
Not only are the views amazing, the food is equally as great. I’ve had the best pizza ever in this lovely city. Il Pizzaiuolo makes a pizza with the perfect chewiness of crust and tanginess of tomato sauce all lightly covered in creamy cheese. I dream of this pizza and would go back to the city for this alone. Mmmmm I could just eat pizza and gelato all day long. Can’t wait to go back!
